Kafwala Camp

Kafwala Camp is built on the banks of the beautiful Kafue River and is approximately 43km above the Hook Bridge within the Northern sector of the Kafue National Park. A 7km stretch of rapids partially fronts the camp and start some 700m upstream, at which point the river is about 1km wide with many islands which support dense riverine forest.

The Camp

The 12-bedded Kafwala Camp consists of four huts. Huts 1 & 2 are large chalets with three single beds each. They are joined by a breezeway which itself has two single beds, but with limited privacy. Hut 3 is a large rondavel with two single beds, whilst Hut 4 is a small double bedded rondavel. Separate to the huts are two (flushing) toilets, a shower and a bathroom.

In addition to the huts there is a dining sitenge, a lounge sitenge, a braai area, kitchen, pantry, storeroom and staff quarters.

The camp is self-catering, so one has to bring food, drink and personal effects (this includes torches and a first aid kit). It should also be noted that vehicle requirements such as fuel, oil and puncture/vehicle repairs are not provided for. Aside from these aspects everything else is there including a deep freezer, fridges, lamps, crockery/cutlery, bedding and mosquito nets.

The camp staff attend to cooking (supply flour and yeast for delicious camp bread), servicing the rooms, washing and any other reasonable request so as to make your stay both comfortable and memorable.

Things to do

Around the camp the bird-life is abundant whilst the North and South loop roads afford interesting game viewing. A trip further North will be rewarded with the splendid Busanga Plains. If you're a keen fisherman, remember to pack your fishing tackle as cook does an excellent job of filleting and cooking fish. It is also possible for boats to be launched at a site close to the camp. Mostly light tackle (including 'fly') is used for the bream, barbel and pike that are there to be caught. It should, however, be remembered that Fishing Permits (as well as Park Entry Permits) need to be bought at the Main Gate to the park.

Location wise Kafwala is a great place for an 'away from it all' tranquil and carefree break. The nearest telephone is 180km away in Mumbwa, whilst you'll have to go 340km back to Lusaka if you insist on a daily newspaper.
